Meta Unveils New AI Image Generator on Instagram and Facebook Photos

Meta introduced a complimentary image generator website named “Imagine with Meta AI” on Wednesday, which was created utilizing 1.1 billion public Facebook and Instagram images.

The independent AI (artificial intelligence) image generator site is driven by Meta’s image foundation model, Emu, enabling users to produce high-resolution distinctive images using textual prompts.

“People have shared their enjoyment in using Imagine, Meta AI’s image generation feature based on text input, for creating entertaining and inventive content in chat conversations. We are now extending the availability of Imagine beyond chat,” stated Meta in its Newsroom post that announced the website and additional AI capabilities.

“Besides our messaging platform designed for lighthearted interactive exchanges, you can also generate free images on the web.”

As mentioned earlier, Meta employed 1.1 billion publicly viewable Facebook and Instagram images to teach its AI how to produce images, raising questions about user privacy.

Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs at Meta, emphasized that private posts and messages not openly shared on the company’s platforms were excluded from its AI model’s training data to protect consumer privacy. The firm has also implemented measures to eliminate private information from publicly accessible datasets used for training.

Clegg commented, “We have endeavored to exclude datasets containing a significant amount of personal data,” adding that the “overwhelming majority” of data utilized by Meta for training purposes was public.

At present, four images are generated for every message by the AI-generated images, each displaying a watermark in the bottom left corner signifying they were produced using Meta AI. Although, Meta plans to add unnoticeable watermarks shortly with a deep learning model to enhance the transparency and traceability of these AI-created images.

“The hidden watermark is undetectable by human vision, but can be recognized by a corresponding model. It remains resilient against standard image alterations such as cropping, resizing, color adjustments (brightness, contrast, etc.), screenshots, image compression, noise, sticker overlays, and more. We aim to integrate invisible watermarking into numerous products containing AI-generated imagery in the future,” Meta explained in their post.

Currently, the “Imagine with Meta AI” tool is exclusively available to users in the United States for free and is anticipated to extend to other regions soon. The dedicated website can be found at Imagine with Meta AI.
