Xiaomi Set to Unveil EV Technology at December 28 Stride Launch Event
|Over 500 experts were recruited globally by Xiaomi to create their in-house self-driving technology.
Xiaomi has announced that they will soon present their electric vehicle (EV) technology. Known as one of the top smartphone manufacturers worldwide, the Beijing-based company declared in 2021 its intention to enter the electric vehicle market, with its first vehicle expected to premiere in 2024. Earlier this year, an EV called ‘Modena’ was spotted being tested in frigid, snowy conditions. Nevertheless, no product reveals will take place at the forthcoming launch event.
In a post, Xiaomi stated that their EV Technology would be unveiled during the Stride event on December 28 at 2 pm Beijing time (11:30 am IST). Company founder and CEO Lei Jun expressed Xiaomi EV’s goal to combine “automotive, consumer electronics, and intelligent ecosystems,” thereby redefining automotive industry technology. He emphasized that the December event would only exhibit EV technologies without introducing any new products.

Xiaomi reportedly received approval from China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), which oversees investment and production capacity in the nation’s auto industry, to manufacture electric vehicles. The company committed to investing $10 billion (approximately Rs. 82,700 crores) over ten years in this field. Their first batch of cars is scheduled for mass production during the first half of 2024.
This January, an EV prototype named ‘Modena’ was seen being tested by Xiaomi in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It was believed to be an evaluation of the vehicle’s battery performance under extreme cold temperatures. The company confirmed earlier that they employed over 500 specialists from all over the world to develop their proprietary autonomous driving technology.
Test images of the Xiaomi Modena revealed an aerodynamically designed sedan featuring a lengthy hood and a graceful, sloping roofline tapering toward the rear. The vehicle also sported retractable door handles and LiDAR sensors on its roof.
